AT THE POINT OF THE THUNDER

As the first drum-rolling echo thunders
frozen consciousness
lightning flared blunders
in a lesser responsiveness
to percussive stone showers
sharpening, aware,
unshrinking, enduring what empowers
the rain-bath
and, thus baptised before a tumult
of discordant ensemble
break free

drawing me
along a cloud-shadowed path
thunder-clapped and light speared,
self-obliterating flashes
whitely absorbed into spirit formations,
hearing between out-spanning crashes
amid black whirlpooled
sweeping immaterial concentrations
lost voices echo-calling
worlds-weary sorrowing
searching for light.

Holy Archangel Michael
soul-summon
from beyond a terror of soullessness
upwards
‘to where is neither variableness
nor shadow of turning’
where light awaits
where, cloaking, scattering and wavelike
dark-smothering unreason
is a lightning flash
floored, undulating, not burning
enclosed or encompassing…
